With the adoption of EU Directive 2002/95/EC, the use of certain hazardous chemical substances is prohibited. Effective July 1, 2006, no new electric or electronic equipment may contain any of the following banned substances:

a) Lead (Pb)
b) Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI))
c) Mercury (Hg)
d) PBB (polybrominated biphenyls) and PBDE (polybrominated diphenyl ethers)
e) Cadmium (Cd)

As complete elimination of the banned substances is impossible, an EU Commission Decision of August 18, 2005 (2005/618/EC) tolerates certain maximum concentrations. These tolerances, defined by weight in homogenous materials, are:

≤0.1 weight % for a, b, c, d and ≤0.01 weight % for e.

The following exceptions as outlined in the Annex of Directive 2002/95/EC are applicable:

Lead as an alloying element in steel containing up to 0.35% lead by weight, in aluminum containing up to 0.4% lead by weight, in copper alloy containing up to 4 % lead by weight; lead in the glass of electronic components.

As a global enterprise, the Schaffner Group designs and manufactures products in accordance with this legislation. We see the need for implementation and compliance as a key element of our business activity and, whenever possible, we strive to achieve concentration levels below the maximum tolerances.

We already avoid using all the materials cited in the RoHS Directive. Wherever possible, we try to reduce additional substances prohibited by or of concern to our customers or in anticipation of future regulations.

All RoHS-compliant or lead-free products can be identified by the letter “R” (RoHS-compliant) or “L” (lead-free) as an integral part of the date code. The date code can be found on products and packages.

e.g. yywwR (indicating a RoHS-compliant product in production lot yyww)
e.g. yywwL (indicating a lead-free product in production lot yyww)

Schaffner uses the following labels in documents and on its website to identify RoHS-compliant or lead-free products:

Schaffner Group: RoHS product status ~ 150 kB
Schaffner Group: Recommended lead free soldering parameter 14 kB
Directive RoHS of the EU 115 kB
